Environmental Control Units for Medical Shelters and Field Hospitals

Reliable environmental control is essential to operating a medical shelter, mobile field hospital, or other deployable medical facility. The BLU-MED® Environmental Control Unit (ECU) is a portable, highly ruggedized HVAC system engineered to provide dependable heating and cooling for patient-care environments in remote locations, extreme climates, and rapidly changing response conditions.

Designed to integrate with BLU-MED® medical shelters and field hospital systems, each ECU helps create a controlled, comfortable interior where clinicians can evaluate patients, perform advanced care, operate medical equipment, and sustain healthcare services beyond the walls of a permanent hospital.

What is a BLU-MED® ECU? A BLU-MED® ECU is a portable, mil-spec environmental control unit engineered to heat and cool deployable medical facilities. It connects with BLU-MED® medical shelters to support controlled interior conditions for patients, clinical teams, and medical equipment.

Environmental Control Is Part of the Medical Facility

A rapidly deployable medical shelter is more than a temporary enclosure. To function as a clinical environment, the facility must support the people, equipment, and procedures operating inside it. Heating, cooling, and air movement affect patient comfort, staff endurance, equipment performance, and the ability to continue care during prolonged deployments.

BLU-MED® ECUs provide the environmental-control capability needed for individual medical shelters and modular field hospitals. The same rugged platform can support a focused patient screening shelter, an emergency treatment area, an alternate care site, hospital surge capacity, or a multi-shelter mobile hospital configured for advanced medical operations.

Rugged HVAC for Demanding Medical Missions

BLU-MED® ECUs are constructed from aviation-grade aluminum and powder-coated inside and out for long-term durability. The family of ECUs is engineered to mil-spec environmental control unit specifications and designed for repeated transport, setup, and operation in demanding field conditions.

An operating range of -50°F to +132°F allows medical planners to configure climate-controlled deployable medical facilities for extreme cold, intense heat, and variable weather conditions. Stackable for transport and forklift-compatible handling support efficient movement with the rest of the medical shelter system. An available wheel kit can simplify final positioning at the deployment site.

Where BLU-MED® ECUs Support Patient Care

  • Medical shelters and patient-care facilities
Maintain controlled interior conditions for evaluation, treatment, recovery, staff operations and medical equipment.
  • Mobile field hospitals
Support modular clinical areas such as triage, emergency care, inpatient wards, surgery, diagnostics, pharmacy, and command functions.
  • Hospital surge and alternate care sites
Extend climate-controlled healthcare space when fixed facilities are damaged, over capacity or unavailable near the affected population.
  • Screening, isolation and containment/treatment missions
Pair the ECU with compatible airflow and filtration components to support the environmental requirements of infectious-disease response facilities.

BLU-MED® ECU Models and Specifications

ECU sizing and configuration should be matched to the medical shelter, electrical system, climate, patient-care function, and deployment plan. BLU-MED® specialists can help identify the appropriate model for an individual medical shelter or complete field hospital.

BLU-MED® 5-ton Environmental Control Units (ECUs) and Air Filtration Units™ support a six-shelter negative pressure isolation facility deployed in San Antonio, Texas, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The integrated system provided climate control and enhanced air filtration for patient isolation and treatment operations.

Add Enhanced Air Filtration for Screening, Triage, and Isolation

For missions that require enhanced air filtration, the BLU-MED® 5-ton ECU can be paired with the BLU-MED Air Filtration Unit. The filtration module installs between the ECU and the medical shelter end panel, creating an integrated environmental-control and filtration path for the facility.

This configuration is designed for patient screening and triage facilities and can support isolation and containment/treatment applications when incorporated into a properly configured complete system. By filtering circulated air and adding HEPA and UVC germicidal filtration, the Air Filtration Unit helps medical teams establish a cleaner, more controlled care environment for patients and staff.

An Integrated System for Deployable Medical Care

The ECU and Air Filtration Unit are most effective when planned as part of the complete deployable medical facility. Shelter size, clinical function, climate, electrical configuration, airflow targets, filtration requirements, power generation, and transport constraints should be evaluated together.

BLU-MED® can configure environmental control for a single portable medical shelter, a patient isolation shelter, a hospital surge facility, or a complete mobile field hospital. This system-level approach gives healthcare and response organizations a rugged, repeatable platform for establishing temperature-controlled medical space …when and where needed™.
